Abstract
The topic of our research project is Smart Home Technology and Children’s Privacy. More and more light is shed on Smart Home Technologies nowadays. Due to the development of technologies, more and more people accept “smart†things at the home. However, we notice that the protection towards users’ privacies doesn’t follow up the fast change in technology. As the most vulnerable population, children and teenagers’ privacy arouses dramatic concern. We notice there is an obvious gap between technological products and social concerns on privacy. As a result, we research the marketing strategies of the leading companies and try to figure out whether those big tech and the specific smart home technological company has made an effort to improve the situation. Our research aims to conclude the marketing strategies of companies regarding protection towards privacy, especially for children. Before the start of our research, we did lots of literature reviews, which gave us lots of thoughts on digging the topic. Previous papers show concern on privacy protection, but more generally, we conclude the urgent need in care for children’s privacy. Furthermore, we borrow the way to build codebook from the literature review, which helps us better organize our information. When it comes to the key terms of our project, the definition of smart might be taken into consideration. We define smart more as interactive than high-tech here, cause interactive home equipment may arouse more concern on harm to privacy.
