Abstract

Background: The Interrupting Prolonged sitting with ACTivity (InPACT) at Home program provides youth with access to virtual, instructor-led exercise videos to promote physical activity in the home. While this program has had statewide reach, there is a need to understand the effectiveness of the exercise videos to induce positive metabolic and psychological outcomes in youth. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine and compare the short-term effects of the InPACT at Home exercise videos on metabolic (physical activity energy expenditure) and psychological (perceived exertion, perceived enjoyment and in-task mood) outcomes in children ages 7-12 years. Methods: Fifty-four participants ages 7-12 years will be recruited to participate in this study. Participants will complete 5×8-minute InPACT at Home exercise videos (cardio, strength, and mindfulness) and a 1×8-minute sedentary control video. Physical activity enjoyment will be assessed using the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale. In-task mood will be assessed using the Feeling Scale. Perceived exertion will be assessed using the Borg Ratings of Perceived Exertion Scale. Physical activity energy expenditure will be assessed using indirect calorimetry. Results: Data collection will occur during the Summer of 2022. We hypothesize physical activity energy expenditure and perceived exertion will be higher during the exercise videos compared to sedentary control. Specifically, we hypothesize that energy expenditure, exertion, mood, and enjoyment will be highest in the cardio videos, followed by strength, and mindfulness videos. We also hypothesize enjoyment and psychological mood will be higher during the exercise videos compared to the sedentary control video, with the highest enjoyment and mood responses recorded during the cardio videos, followed by the mindfulness and strength videos. Conclusion: If we conclude that the InPACT at Home videos elicit a sufficient amount of energy expenditure to improve health and are in fact enjoyable and mood, then they can be incorporated into youth physical activity interventions. If we conclude that the InPACT at Home videos do not elicit a sufficient amount of psychological and metabolic responses, future research will focus on adapting the intensity, duration, and type of videos produced.
