Abstract
Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects a large number of Americans, but the Filipino American population seems to be disproportionately affected by this disease. Previous studies on self care techniques utilized by patients with diabetes have identified useful habits for self management of diabetes, but no studies have been conducted on their self management experiences during the pandemic within the Filipino American population. This study’s goal is to analyze self management experiences of Filipino Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nineteen participants, who are Filipino Americans living with type 2 diabetes, were recruited for this qualitative study and given semi-structured interviews. Those interviews were recorded and then transcribed. The transcripts were read over by each member of the team and coded separately. Then they were reviewed together to organize the findings into categories and themes. An analysis found three major themes along with a few subthemes. The first theme is stressors of the pandemic. The second theme is coping behaviors with subcategories that include lifestyle-focused coping and emotion-focused coping. The last theme is self-management outcomes. Results from this study will highlight the experiences of diabetes self management among the Filipino American population during COVID-19 . Additionally, the results may shine a light on why Filipino Americans are so disproportionately affected by diabetes and help guide the future of healthcare to be more equitable for everyone.
