Abstract

Augmented Reality (AR) is the process of overlaying useful computer-generated data, like text, sound effects, and graphics, on the user’s physical world in real-time through a device. AR is steadily growing in popularity as it is being applied to a variety of fields, specifically entertainment and marketing. However, the application of AR in the product design domains is still in its early stages. Many industrial companies, like automobile companies, have only recently begun to utilize some possibilities of AR in product design. This project aims to extend the possibilities of AR in product design by developing a mobile AR app for smartphones using the Unity game engine that allows utilizing statistically accurate three-dimensional (3D) body shape models in the real-world environment. Statistical body shape models developed based on analyses of 3D laser scans of hundreds of people in various poses are implemented in the AR environment. The app features real-time environment tracking, body shape model positioning, and anthropometric shape modification. This AR application can be applied to a variety of fields. For example, it will be useful for automobile companies to examine a prototype vehicle interior in an early design stage by accurately visualizing target vehicle occupants and validating interactions between the occupants and the interior.
