Abstract
Cardiac ischemia, reduced blood flow to the heat, is common in those suffering from Progeria, a rare, progressive genetic disorder that causes advanced aging in children. Due to the advanced aging, heart attacks caused from ischemia often characterize the fatalities of people with progeria. Through western blot analysis and optical mapping, it is possible to identify the specific protein that causes ischemia in cardiomyocytes with the genetic mutation for progeria. What this research is trying to accomplish is finding a difference between the protein expressed in ischemic cardiomyocytes without a genetic mutation for Progeria and in ischemic cardiomyocytes with a genetic mutation for Progeria. With the identification of the protein, it will be possible to produce drugs that specifically target that protein and change how it is expressed to prevent death from ischemia heart failure in people suffering from Progeria.
