Abstract

As part of determining the overall Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) for a novel hydrokinetic turbine design, RAFT (Reconfigurable Array of High-Efficiency Ducted Turbines for Hydrokinetic Energy Harvesting), major contributors to the Operating Expense (OpEx) of this new design were determined, and a parametric model of OpEx was developed. To that end, previous studies on LCOE and OpEx modeling of hydrokinetic turbines, as well as similar renewable technologies such as wind turbines, were surveyed. Major contributors to OpEx were determined to be (i) insurance cost, (ii) post-installation monitoring, and (iii) operation and maintenance. These factors were broken down and evaluated through sensitivity analysis to find their contributions to the OpEx. The combination of these three variables gives a first-order estimate of RAFT’s OpEx and can be used in simulations to determine the economic viability and adoptability of RAFT.
