Abstract

Since the beginning of their creation, we have known antibiotics to be effective up to a certain point- when bacterial strains become resistant to them. This property of antibiotic resistance has pushed us to search for other applications that provide effective antibacterial activity while maintaining safety standards- such as nanoparticles. In this research project we have been creating a database by analyzing data from hundreds of research papers on the usage of nanoparticles. We are entering information like the bacterial species on which the experiments were performed, the type of nanoparticles used, their shapes, and much more. We are hoping to use this to understand what features of nanoparticles help kill certain bacteria. Silver nanoparticles seem to be the most utilized in the experiments, which seems to be an important point to note. The next step of this project will be to utilize this information in order to develop machine learning, a type of Artificial Intelligence. This research is important considering the consequences people already face daily when the bacterial infection they are exposed to, cannot be treated by anything we utilize today. Cases of simple diseases that turn to outright fatality. We are in danger of living in a post-antibiotic future, one where a papercut could mean death. This research is expanding knowledge in all relevant fields like pathology, biomedical engineering, epidemiology, and many more.
