Abstract
Introduction: The future of medicine is noninvasive, especially when monitoring high-risk, trauma, or immunocompromised patients. The current standard for monitoring central venous pressure requires invasive methods that might be associated with complications such as hemorrhage and infection (1). We examined the ability of non-invasive central venous pressure (NICVP) to monitor central venous pressure (CVP) by monitoring the changes in upper arm blood flow in response to circumferential pressure to the upper arm veins using bioimpedance. Methods: 10 patients were screened for the presence of a CVP line in the internal/external jugular or subclavian vein. Patients were then monitored for a period of 5-10 minutes via a blood pressure cuff around the patient’s arm, EKG stickers on the wrist, bicep (brachial vein), and shoulder. The NICVP value denotes the cuff pressure at the maximum derivative of the volume increase under the cuff during deflation (4). During the monitoring period, the patient’s CVP value via the monitor was marked and compared to the NICVP value by Bland-Altman analysis. Results: Conclusion: NICVP may be an effective substitute for CVP measurement and serve as a valuable tool for monitoring the critically ill and injured.
