Abstract
There are approximately 1.9 million children aged 3-17 years diagnosed with depression in the United States. Among these teens include those residing in areas with limited mental health care and/or psychiatric providers. The study evaluates proportions and trends in depression and severity among children ages 12-17 present in pediatric primary care and describes clinical characteristics among adolescents who screened positive for depression. The main method of the study was completing chart review through MiChart from UM Psychiatry and gathering data such as screening results, diagnosis, treatment plans, patient history, and referrals to mental health providers. For this particular research study, we will be exploring the relationship between the PHQ-9 score and the treatment plan of the patient such as psychotropic medication prescription and the changes in medication that a patient may receive. Other variables such as refusal of medication will also be analyzed as part of this study. The findings from this research will help educate providers and pediatric residents and facilitate care systems for children in underserved areas without specialty services. This study is part of growing research not only for patients, but also for primary providers and psychiatrists who offer guidance on further diagnostic questions, medication recommendations, or appropriate psychotherapy.
