Abstract
My project focuses on the inaccuracies in using race and ethnicity as demographic factors in the United States and how they do not tell as much information as we think or need. The review paper I have been writing for the year brings data from many different studies and published literature together to talk about the very complex issue of race and ethnicity measurement. For example, I explain that race and ethnicity are not the same things as race tends to be about physical characteristics while ethnicity is mostly about ethnic traits, like culture and language. However, race and ethnicity are used interchangeably. In my paper, we used old terms provided by the United States to show how inaccurate these labels can be and then also delve into how different groups under a single racial category vary. Accurate measurement of race and ethnicity is essential to help guide public health officials, doctors, nurses, policymakers, politicians, and other government officials for surveillance of health and economic inequities within the United States. Hundreds of papers have been written on this topic and many have been sourced in this paper. We are planning to submit our review paper in the coming months.
