Abstract

Maya Sundaresan’s internship with Detroit Public Television’s Great Lakes Now program helped to further inform and educate the public on the Great Lakes region as a whole and the various social, political, and economic current events that occur within the region. It also provided Maya with real-world experience within the mass media industry and provided her with an inside-perspective on the roles and duties of a professional. During her time, Maya completed numerous tasks, including compiling biweekly news roundups regarding drinking water, energy, and PFAS; creating interactive quizzes for audiences; and researching and writing articles for publication. She would also attend Zoom calls with her mentor three times a week to further ensure communication and better develop her understanding of certain concepts. By completing these activities, Maya was able to ultimately enhance the functionality of the Great Lakes Now program and successfully provide more information about the region to avid followers of the news source. She was also able to further her knowledge on mass media and article construction. Because of this, Maya can now carry these learnings with her throughout life and utilize the knowledge she obtained during this internship to aid her during future endeavors.
