Abstract
With the global environmental crisis continuing to worsen with minimal concrete solutions on the nearby horizon, more definitive action and policies against climate change will be imperative in any step towards saving the planet. Renewable energy sources are absolutely integral to many paths that help counter the dangerous effects of burning fossil fuel. Our research focuses on how policy could be used to drive companies and certain governments to use and produce more renewable energy sources. The research specifically focuses on policy within the European Union during the time frame of 2004-2009. An analysis of whether membership EU countries instituted feed-in tariffs or renewable portfolio standards before 2004, between 2004-2009, or didn’t utilize them during that time frame would serve to better understand why certain EU countries are so far ahead or behind when it comes to converting away from fossil fuels towards more sustainable practices. While the early-stage research doesn’t necessarily provide explicit, concrete conclusions, it helps to build and contribute to the larger context of environmental policy that future decisions can be based on to foster more sustainability in the EU. Because feed-in tariffs support renewable energy development by creating an above-market price for producers and renewable portfolio standards require increased production of renewable energy sources, they actually work hand in hand to truly benefit everyone. Companies can increase their revenue as the government will pay them to use and produce renewable energy sources. Subsequently, general citizens will hopefully be able to live in a more sustainable world. As a whole, everyone can benefit by policy that preserves and helps the world that we all live in.
