Abstract
My project looks at how social determinants and socioeconomic status (SES) affect brain development. The goal is to understand the connection between various social determinants and SES indicators such as education and income and brain development, as well as the implications of these effects. Social determinants are the conditions in which people grow up. Some examples can consist of socioeconomic status, neighborhood, education status, access to health care, and other conditions. The part I play in this research consists of editing and contributing to the literature my mentor is writing on the findings. Some common themes that I have noticed are that there is indeed a correlation between social determinants such as parental education, education, income, and brain development. Another common theme that I have noticed has to do with minorities’ diminished returns (MDRs) . This is the idea that minorities experience less health benefits from their social determinants and SES indicators. The results from this research can guide us and future researchers to recognize and try to solve these important public health problems.
