Abstract
Election violence occurring all around the world has been displayed and supported on social media, yet little research has been conducted on it. Specifically, election violence related to Côte d’Ivoire elections has appeared across thousands of posts from over 170 Facebook groups for several years. Therefore, we are examining election violence and social media, specifically Facebook posts regarding Côte d’Ivoire elections, using several methodologies. In particular, we find that opposition supporters post more about topics related to election violence in Côte d’Ivoire than incumbent supporters. By working to predict and better understand social media discussions of election violence in Côte d’Ivoire, we can better understand posts related to election violence, misinformation, and the contribution of factors such as the frequency of certain moderators or posters across different Facebook groups. We can understand how to intervene when people use social media to spread misinformation in general in election discussions.
