Abstract
The Stamps Desis Lab, founded by University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor Audrey Bennett, hosts events annually on topics related to making an effective change within our world. As part of the Socially Mediating Access to Scholarly Findings Related to Social Justice project my role was to create and lead a social media campaign for the lab. The questions I aimed to address in this research project are 1) How does social media work? 2) What makes a successful social media campaign? and, 3) How do I get people to follow the Stamps Desis Lab? The bulk of my preliminary research began with my researching what a social media campaign entailed, and looking at how the university already represents itself on social media. This involved reading, watching videos, talking to students about what they found interesting on social media, and talking to my mentor about how she saw this coming together. Once I put together a plan in the form of a lengthy Google document compiling all my findings we began to plan out posts. In this new semester we are going to begin posting, and will track the effectiveness of each post. Additionally, we will also try and connect with local efforts specifically in Detroit as a way to help our community. Overall, this project is important because the Stamps Desis Lab is working tirelessly to improve our world. Developing a social media presence is crucial not only because it reaches the world as an audience, but also because it is like a time capsule of all the work this amazing individual is doing.
