Abstract

Space weather is the study of how solar activity affects Earth and human activities. Since solar storms can affect satellites and the power grid, both of which play an integral role in the life of many individuals, this field is becoming increasingly important. Ground based magnetometer systems are being developed and deployed around the world to increase accuracy of measurements and predictions of space weather. However, the locations are currently limited by the availability of accessible WiFi, decreasing the amount of data available to use in measurements of space weather. To solve this problem, this study looked into low cost, low power methods of connecting the Raspberry Pi sensor system to a database using an Internet of Things cellular connection. In order to find the best hardware option, this study looked into every major option that is compatible with the Raspberry Pi system, and compared the options based on initial cost, cost over time, and power consumption. Based on these criteria, Sixfab’s LTE HAT was selected for its adaptability, affordability, and ease of use. Many components of the HAT can be easily swapped out, and it is compatible with many popular global IoT sims, including Nova and Huawei. It also consists of affordable parts and was marketed directly for IoT sensors and devices. Basic communications have already been set up using a TCP internet protocol, and continued efforts will be put into linking the Raspberry Pi with a server to upload its data. This would likely be accomplished by modifying or building on code used in an earlier system.
