Abstract

Detroit Public Schools Community District’s Enrollment Division created a pilot program in which school principals are participating in order to recover enrollment losses due to the pandemic and to achieve sustained growth. The goal of the pilot program is to grow overall enrollment, recruit new and previously enrolled students, and retain current students within their schools. These goals of the pilot will be achieved by providing training opportunities, coaching, and resources for the schools. Providing these will allow the schools to develop and execute strategic enrollment plans. By educating and providing resources to the participating schools, the goal is to see an overall increase in enrollment from 47,881 students (2021) to 50,000+ students (2022). The enrollment division’s team created a proposal to introduce the district to what they wish to achieve and in what participating principals will be taking part. As the project progresses, the team, including myself, have created proposals, schedules, and training summaries for school staff to understand and appreciate the importance of this work. The Enrollment Division’s team worked closely with other departments to prepare their program in order to best target the families in the district. 23 schools were selected to be in the pilot program. The Enrollment Division and partnering departments developed a 7-session curriculum that covers critical topics to growing enrollment: setting enrollment goals, creating partnerships, branding and marketing, and event management. I have been working to create the curriculum, as well as surveys and discussion guides, for the Customer Service module. The District has identified the importance of customer service in converting prospective or interested families into enrolled families. This training will first be used as part of the pilot, but the Enrollment Division hopes to expand this and much of the sessions to all parent-facing enrollment staff across schools.
