Abstract

Over the course of the pandemic, students have experienced severe mental health issues. Due to a lack of communication and decrease in human interaction, students today feel more isolated and have less resources compared to before the pandemic. Consequently, depression and anxiety have been a real concern. Therefore, our team held an observational study focused on mental health and resilience in college students during the 2020-2021 school year. The investigator developed, Roadmap 2.0 app, provides a place for students to focus on gratitude and positive mental health with the goal of reducing the stress and anxiety these students feel. We hypothesized mental health activities within the app would allow participants to focus on the positive which in turn could help ameliorate their mental health symptoms. An observational study was conducted in the fall of 2020, where participants were recruited from the University target lists email and posters. Quantitatively, physical health is being monitored, ranging from daily footsteps to general heart rate. Participants took a baseline, 3 monthly surveys, and an exit survey. They were provided access to the roadmap app and were given a fitbit to link to the roadmap app. Throughout this study we have collected both qualitative or quantitative data. The general consensus from the entries I have seen is that this app was quite helpful for students. More specifically, it was seen that friends and food were the most helpful when it came to making someone’s day. However, results are ongoing and additional studies are needed to better understand the role of mHealth as a strategy for decreasing mental health symptoms.
