Abstract

The Textile Movement Database project seeks to catalog the physical movement of textiles in motion into a searchable database of online videos, with accurate information of the textiles along with the ability to be cross-referenced to costume renderings and garment samples. This database will allow the student or designer to view the movement and qualities of textiles, rather than from a small static computer image, which is how most internet textile shops sell fabrics today. The core of the database will begin with the creation of twenty-five dresses in twenty-five different fabrics to contrast the differences in movement. The twenty-five dresses are showcasing a dress from five separate decades, beginning with the 1920’s and ending with the 1960’s. The Textile Movement Database will serve as an invaluable communication and resource tool between costume designers and makers in order to facilitate informed textiles decisions, in light of diminishing fabric shops.
