Abstract

Despite the concerningly high mortality rate associated with patients who have an aortic aneurysm, there is not a substantial or effective method to detect this disease in order to take preventive precautions in a timely manner. If an aortic aneurysm was successfully detected in affected patients prior to or during the earlier onset stages, the risk of death would be far lower, as physicians can carefully watch the development and risks of the aneurysm before intervening surgically. A blood biomarker known as suPAR has previously been demonstrated to be associated with cardiovascular diseases and subclinical vascular dysfunction, which is why the point of inquiry of this study is determining whether measuring suPAR levels in patients may be indicative of whether they are at risk or currently afflicted with an aortic aneurysm. In order to successfully assess the correlation between high suPAR levels and aortic aneurysms, this study will measure the plasma levels of suPAR with ELISA assay testing of patients with and without aortic aneurysm symptoms. These samples are collected through the patients enrolled in the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Health Improvement plan and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis. Through the data collected concerning suPar levels in patients with AA and those without AA, and undermining whether suPAR levels can predict the need for preventative measures such as surgery, one can determine if measuring the suPAR levels in a patient suspected of an aortic aneurysm will truly be indicative of whether they have/will have an aortic aneurysm. As there is prior evidence that alludes to this outcome, the intended result of this study is to successfully conclude that there is a positive correlation between the suPAR levels and risk of an aortic aneurysm in a patient. The research on aortic aneurysms and its prevention methods is an expansive scope that must be further researched on to improve outcomes of patients suffering from this disease, and resolving suPAR’s correlation with aortic aneurysms will be a beneficial perspective to analyze.
