Abstract

The impacts of the ongoing pandemic have correlated with an increase in insomnia cases. This may be connected to the neighborhood demographics of those affected, particularly with regard to socioeconomic status. This study was undertaken to explore the relationship between neighborhood characteristics and individuals’ insomnia precedence and impact from COVID-19. Participants included 208 adults who participated in a clinical trial for insomnia treatment from 2016-2017 and were reevaluated in 2020. Data regarding neighborhoods was collected by utilizing geocoding to determine participants’ US Census Tracts. Subsequently, neighborhood characteristics were evaluated according to protocols from the PhenX toolkit for Neighborhood Concentrated Disadvantage and Social Vulnerability Index. The data for each participant’s census tract have been collected, but the results have not yet been fully determined and are currently being analyzed. Even so, based on previous studies revolving around the relationship between insomnia and COVID-19, it is hypothesized that higher Neighborhood Concentrated Disadvantage and Social Vulnerability Index will have a linear correlation and, as a consequence, will have a linear correlation with insomnia severity according to the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI). Implications of these results may pose significant systematic changes in improving neighborhood safety in order to promote improved overall mental and physical health.
