Abstract

Achilles tendinopathy is a common tendon disease causing pain, impaired function and swelling in both athletes and the general population1. It is currently understood that the disease is caused by repeated damage to the tendon without proper reparation2. However, despite its prevalence the biological mechanisms and pathophysiology behind Achilles Tendinopathy are largely unknown. A variety of different treatment methods are used, ranging from conservative care methods such as rest and anti-inflammatory medications to a number of surgical techniques1. Treatment and management tactics are highly debated and many lack proven scientific backgrounds2. Our research serves to gain a better understanding of the etiology of Achilles Tendinopathy through investigation of pathological and cell-based findings. Human achilles tendon samples were collected from the operating room from patients undergoing surgical repair. Samples were then histologically sectioned, stained, imaged and scored using the Bonar Method. From there, findings were correlated with cell-based in vitro observations to highlight any similarities or trends among the sampled population. As of now, this research study remains in its early stages, focusing on collection of reputable data. Not enough data has been gathered and processed to draw any significant conclusions on the underlying mechanisms of Achilles Tendinopathy. Ultimately, the goal of this research and its resulting findings are to lead to the development of more precise and effective treatment methods and preventative measures–preventing Achilles Tendinopathy from diminishing the quality of life for patients in the general and athletic populations.
