Abstract

The topic of my research project is the effect of nutrient intake and medications on asthma control levels. It is important that we study asthma and the role of the micriome because asthma can can be debilitating and exacerbate other health conditions, and research into the microbiome may reveal key nutrient effects that we are currently unaware of. The question we are trying to answer is whether any nutrients correlate with asthma control scores (a measurement of how controlled a patient’s asthma symptoms are during their everyday life given their medications and lifestyle). The hypothesis is that some medications and nutrients, in addition to the gut microbiota, may aggravate or alleviate patients’ asthma symptoms. We do cross-sectional research using data collected from an adult asthma cohort (n= 171) that lists each patients’ nutrient profiles, medications, and asthma control scores, then run tests to find correlations. Data is analyzed with non-parametric statistical methods in R. Variables that are significantly associated with asthma control are then further analyzed against the nutritional profiles. Future work will include correlation testing between nutrients of interest, gut microbial diversity, and asthma control. The conclusions from this study can catalyze further research into the gut microbiome based on the nutrients that produced differences. Also, some of the factors that we analyzed may lead to future analysis of non-pharmaceutical interventions and a new knowledge about the relationship between dietary intake, the gut microbiome, and asthma.
