Abstract
Though the importance of mental health is gaining more recognition, there’s still many questions surrounding the mental health of adolescents and the type of treatments that are appropriate. Due to the scarcity in the numbers of psychiatrists, many adolescents with mental health problems do not have access to adequate care (Weiner, 2021). The use of universal mental health screening measures will help to bridge this gap. This project aims to understand the differences in clinical characteristics and outcomes between patients with different depression severity levels. The main method for this study is chart review of adolescents, ages 12-17, with a positive depression screening in the Michigan Medicine system. We examined patient backgrounds–experiences with suicidal ideation, trauma–and how the providers treated their illness–the use of psychotropic medication, counseling, and recommended follow up dates. In analysis of this chart review, we will determine what factors affect the perceived severity of the child’s depression and how the primary care providers choose to treat it. More specifically, in our research we will be analyzing the relation between PHQ-9 score and the recommendation for a follow up. By collecting data which can lead to informed discussion about the best adolescent mental health treatment methods, there will be improved care for these adolescents from their primary care doctors which is one of the goals of this research.
