Abstract
The TN01 Pathway to Prevention Project is a research study focused on screening the family members of patients with type 1 diabetes to discover who may be at an increased risk to develop diabetes. In previous evaluations of our participant data, we have noticed little diversity in those who enrolled. Over the past 5 years, our research team has focused on expanding recruitment using diversity, equity, and inclusion principles. Participants are recruited from patient logs and are also allowed to self-enroll. Online recruitment started prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it became a larger proportion of recruitment once in-person recruitment was suspended. We are hopeful that the ability to choose in-person or online screenings allowed patients who may have had limitations with in-person recruitment an opportunity to participate in research. It should be noted that type 1 diabetes does occur significantly in people of Caucasian descent so that is an unavoidable limitation for diversifying recruitment. We will analyze the recruitment data stored in TrialNet participant logs starting from the 2 years prior to the pandemic (March 2018-March 2020) to recruitment that occurred from reactivation of in-person activities during September 2020 through March 2022. Our local data will then be compared to global data to assess the differences between the demographics of participants who chose remote or in-person screening. Depending on trends found, this will drive recommendations for ongoing recruitment methods. By expanding our recruiting efforts, we would expect to see more diversity in our study.
