Abstract
People are aware that health disparities exist in the United States, especially for those in underserved communities, but there is a lack of substantial understanding of the direct contributors to those gaps experienced in our local communities. The racial group that is underrepresented in the health disparities experienced are Asian Americans in underserved communities, despite previous research showing that Asian Americans usually face health disparities in the healthcare system compared to the white population. According to the statistical research on Pfizer, 19.4% of Asian adults are likely to not have a healthcare provider compared to white adults, thus less medical visits and checkups (Pfizer). Asian Americans are also more likely to be exposed to health issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, etc (Pfizer). This research conducted uncovers fundamental factors that contribute to these disparities for this population in the Michigan area. This study includes surveys conducted in pop-up COVID-19 clinics in underserved Asian American communities, interviewing over 400 participants. The set of questions asked in the surveys allows a general understanding of participants’ demographics, and potential factors in vaccine hesitancy, such as age, education of vaccines, employment, health conditions, English proficiency, and accessibility to clinics. Expected results and statistical analysis work are still being discussed. We hope that this study will allow for future research of the promotion of healthcare for underserved communities to further investigate the factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy associated with lower socioeconomic groups.
