Abstract

This project aims to help students at University of Michigan ask questions in class by providing a backchannel in large lecture courses. To analyze how effective this will be, this project recorded data on the questions asked in lectures with backchannels and without backchannels. The number of questions, types of questions, and whether the question was invited by the instructor were all recorded by our group members. At this stage, we are verifying the validity of observing lectures through lecture recordings rather than being in the classroom. In the end, the details that involve the difference between those with a backchannel are analyzed to draw conclusions. Hopefully, that will serve as evidence to see if the use of a backchannel will benefit students.
