Abstract

Over 400,000 patients are treated for cardiac arrest in the US every year, with a survival rate of less than 25% in hospitals and less than 10% outside of a clinical setting. While many treatments and preventative measures have been discovered, there have been no great breakthroughs in improving these statistics for these patients. By researching resuscitative measures which help return of spontaneous circulation, there is hope in increasing survival rates, minimizing the adverse consequences, and improving the quality of life following cardiac arrest. The laboratory is researching a multitude of methods in improving circulation by simulating cardiac arrest in swine models. These experiments include aortic balloon occlusion in the descending aorta during assisted CPR. Measurements of all aspects of the cardiovascular system, including blood pressure, coronary perfusion pressure, cerebral blood flow, the rate of return of spontaneous circulation, and vital signs are collected throughout the experiments to assess the results. Observations of improved health outcomes and decreased residual symptoms would lead to more widespread utilization of these or similar treatments in treating cardiac arrest in patients.
