Abstract

The increasing development in autonomous naval platforms brings forth the need to have the means to surmount research challenges that arise from their development and test conceptual machinery of such onboard systems. A physical simulation of shipboard cooling systems will allow for a better understanding of system reliability and create areas for future improvement. In order to effectively emulate a shipboard cooling system, energy lost in the form of heat from all ship systems — electrical distribution, energy generation, and support systems— must be added to the physical cooling system. To accurately produce the desired variable amount of heat, a controllable source of power is required. This project evaluates a variable frequency drive to control the desired heat input into the cooling system. A testing procedure, electrical safety training, drafting of a wiring diagram, and electrical energy flow calculations are carried out prior to the physical system evaluation. The final point of evaluation is a physical system test with the use of a scale size variable frequency drive and large resistor bank. The physical testing data will be recorded (voltage, current, and frequency (varied)) and compared against mathematical power flow calculations. This testing procedure will provide insight into the control accuracy and feasibility of a variable frequency to produce the desired heat input for a larger simulation system.
