Abstract
Following their service, veterans struggle to reintegrate into their communities and acclimate to the norms of a non-military lifestyle. Furthermore, the support services in place for veterans experience challenges of their own, as they are faced with issues that extend far beyond physical health. In this study, our research group affiliated with the University of Michigan will be applying the Whole Health model as a remedy to the stresses of veterans and the Veterans Affairs workplace environment. This framework centers on eight core areas: moving the body, surroundings, personal development, food and drink, recharge, family, friends, and coworkers, spirit and soul, and power of the mind. Our research group devised questions corresponding to each of these core areas, searching to learn more about the overall health habits of veterans and individuals in the VA workplace. For example, my questions centered on the importance of sharing narratives and investigating emotionality in military culture. Our group postulates that following these Whole Health practices is more beneficial to the overall health and well being of these individuals. Once the survey is distributed, our group will collect and analyze the data. Gaining more knowledge about the effectiveness and commonality of these Whole Health practices will serve as an aid in recommending treatment to these affected groups. Data is currently being analyzed and analysis of data will be presented at the upcoming poster symposium.
