Abstract

Over centuries, there has been enormous work done in solving wide reaching and harmful issues like poverty, world hunger, and access to clean drinking water. These types of problems are termed “wicked problems”, because they do not have a single solution and no clear end point, making them impossible for a single individual, group, or government to end. One critical component that makes solving these wicked problems on a global level easier, and the focus of this project, is to give organizations and individuals working on the problems better access to each other’s work. This project’s goal is to compile design solutions, which are targeted solutions to certain aspects of a wicked problem. This collection of design solutions is presented in a user-friendly website with interactive visuals to be used by individual members of a community and large organizations alike. Another goal of the project is to collect a large enough sample of design solutions to be able to identify areas where none are present and could potentially be impactful. These areas are called “leverage points”. This can be in reference to a specific area of research or a geographical location. Currently, the website is still in development and more design outcomes are being collected through a combination of searching by Dr. Audrey Bennett and her team, and by researchers adding their research to the database using a survey. Once this project is complete, it will be a resource for people across the world to generate new ideas to their local needs and for international organizations to use to direct their resources to areas where they are most needed.
