Abstract
Sleep and circadian disturbances are a core feature of bipolar disorder (BD) with increasing evidence of greater day-to-day variability in sleep timing and duration being associated with mood instability. However, no studies to our knowledge have examined the relationship between different aspects of sleep and their relationship to next day mood taking into account important contextual variables that may play a role in the relationship between sleep and mood. In a unique longitudinal dataset of individuals with BD (n = 10), we will examine the relationship between sleep, mood, and contextual variables (outdoor light exposure, exercise, caffeine intake, alcohol consumption) for four months (one month in each season) over one year. For each of the four months, participants wore a wrist actigraphy device to measure sleep and activity levels and completed a 28-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in which participants reported on key sleep variables (bedtime, waketime, wake after sleep onset, sleep onset latency, sleep quality), mood (best mood, worst mood, and average mood), and contextual events. Using dynamic structural equation modeling (DSEM), we will examine the within-person dynamics between sleep variables and best, worst, and average mood and whether the strength of this relationship is partially accounted for by light exposure, exercise, caffeine intake, and alcohol consumption. Given potential seasonality of BD and circadian rhythms, a unique aspect of these analyses is the ability to assess whether within-person dynamics between sleep, mood, and context are influenced by season of data collection.
