With close to 200 members, CDAD staff work with our members on a variety of initiatives that support our mission of building neighborhood power, including community and youth engagement, collaboration, public policy advocacy, capacity building, and support for neighborhood planning.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/detroit-food-academy\/\">Detroit Food Academy<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Myla Lyons  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>DFA formed in 2011 to connect young people to Detroit&#8217;s vibrant and inspiring food business community. Our program uses the principles and power of business to engage young people in building mission\u2010driven, triple\u2010bottom\u2010line food products. Beginning as a one\u2010day\u2010a\u2010week summer program and developing to now serve 13 Detroit schools and community centers and to reach over 1,000 young Detroiters year\u2010round through programming and workshops, DFA consistently grows through our students\u2019 leadership.<br \/>\nDFA co\u2010creates with young Detroiters year\u2010round through high quality leadership development programming rooted in schools, our food community, and our<br \/>\nneighborhoods. Through food entrepreneurship, students become creators of their own food business projects \u2013 inviting all the self\u2010discovery, innovation, growth that process generates. Through our afterschool, advanced, summer, and business\u2010launch programs, young Detroiters gain a solid foundation in culinary arts, health and wellness, food systems, and business essentials. Students\u2019 ownership over their food project makes leadership come alive as an exciting and powerful way to change the world. DFA\u2019s project\u2010based learning model invites students to work as individuals and as teams to apply their learnings, engage with community, and launch a food\u2010based business project with tangible impact. Students gain the confidence, community connections, and hard and soft skills for professional, academic, and personal wellbeing.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/detroit-public-schools-community-district-office-of-the-superintendent\/\">Detroit Public Schools Community District &#8211; Office of the Superintendent<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Monica Khalique  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) is Michigan\u2019s largest public education system. It is governed by a locally\u2010elected, seven\u2010member board with Dr. Nikolai Vitti serving as superintendent. The District\u2019s mission is to provide every student with a beneficial and rightful educational experience, preparing students to be career and college ready, and qualified to compete in the global market. We champion a whole child approach that combines superior academics with socio\u2010emotional, extracurricular, and health services tailored to each individual student&#8217;s needs. The District has 106 schools and educates 50,000 children.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/detroit-public-televisions-great-lakes-now\/\">Detroit Public Television&#8217;s Great Lakes Now<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Noah Bock  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>Great Lakes Now is a regional initiative from Detroit Public Television that covers water issues in the eight Great Lakes U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. Our goal is to provide news and information on pertinent issues, both serious and light\u2010hearted. We have a monthly show and a daily website.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/dream-of-detroit\/\">Dream of Detroit<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Brooklynne Gabrielle Bates  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>Founded in 2013, Dream of Detroit combines community organizing with housing and land development to build a healthy community and empower a marginalized<br \/>\nneighborhood on the westside of Detroit. The neighborhood is anchored by several key organizations and institutions such as the Muslim Center, a mosque and community<br \/>\ncenter that serves one of the largest and oldest African American Muslim congregations of Detroit. The neighborhood also contains the HUDA Clinic, a free, Muslim\u2010run,<br \/>\ncomprehensive community health clinic serving the healthcare needs of nearby uninsured communities.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/hope-village-revitalization\/\">HOPE Village Revitalization<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Josephine Anna Croce  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>HOPE Village Revitalization is a community\u2010led, community driven organization whose mission is to move the HOPE Village neighborhood forward in a way that mitigates<br \/>\ndisparities in wealth, privilege and educational resources. HOPE Village Revitalization envisions a sustainable, equitable, healthy neighborhood with a high quality of life for all, where neighbors have access to fresh and local food and affordable, quality housing with energy solutions that reduce utility costs and build resilience against climate change. HOPE Village Revitalization also envisions a community where individuals have access to the opportunity to be productive and creative citizens. HVR works in the areas of fresh and healthy food access, sustainable, affordable housing and community connection.<\/p>\n<\/p>\r\n<br>\r\n<hr style=\"color: #dadada;\">\r\n<br><a style=\"font-size: 24px; font-weight: 600;\" href=\"https:\/\/courses.lsa.umich.edu\/urop-summer-symposium-2021\/symposium-presentati\/lgbt-detroit\/\">LGBT Detroit<\/a><br>\r\n<p style=\"color: #00274c; font-weight: 600;\">Lillith Jackson  |  DCERP<\/p>\r\n<p><p>LGBT Detroit, founded in 1994, commits to furthering its mission, increasing the prominence and visibility of Detroit\u2019s LGBT culture, and building a strong, healthy and<br \/>\nvibrant community, with a focus on youth and young adult development, sexual orientation and gender identity education and advocacy, and emotional and physical<br \/>\nwell\u2010being. NSO was established as a non\u2010profit health and human service agency focused on \u201cbeing within reach\u201d through accessible programs designed to strengthen and empower individuals in their<br \/>\ncommunities, support families, and help those in need. NSO has evolved the depth and breadth of our services to meet the changing needs in our community by providing<br \/>\ncomprehensive, safety\u2010net solutions for vulnerable populations in the area of housing, health, and well\u2010being. Through our culturally competent range of services, we strive to support the entrepreneurial spirit and small business community that exists in Detroit\u2019s neighborhoods.
