Abstract

The purpose of this project is to innovate upon current quadrotor technologies by creating a design that is capable of changing its shape in flight to increase maneuverability. Current quadrotor technology has limited maneuverability due to its rigid frame. The quadrotor designed in this morphable drones project is a combination of many disciplines of engineering with the goal of creating a quadrotor with omnidirectional maneuverability. This is made possible by enabling each rotor of the quadrotor to produce thrust in any direction. This achieved by having the rotor assemblies to have two points of rotation, controlled by servos. This prototype was inspired by the idea of a quadrotor that has increased maneuverability and the ability to adapt to wind conditions during flight and make the appropriate in-flight corrections autonomously using a servo-controlled morphable frame. Applications of this technology could be utilized in search and rescue, information gathering, agricultural or environmental surveying. We are designing a simulator to test computer models with real world wind simulation and upon completion will be available to those interested in pursuing similar projects to allow for more efficient development.
