Abstract
The greatest threat to human life on our planet is the global energy crisis. Smart materials that autonomously react to external stimuli have demonstrated significant potential for robotics, energy, environment, and biological applications due to no need for energy input, and pre-programmable functioning. However, there is no systems analysis to use these materials for sustainable operations. Here, we demonstrate how intelligent materials serve the sustainable process to the best of their abilities. First, we design and prepare the smart material. Second, we demonstrate the autonomous reaction. Third, we systematically assess the material’s efficacy and reversibility under diverse flow scenarios. Many processes needing high energy consumption will embrace this new, intelligent material, and more environmentally friendly processes may be developed cost-effectively with minimal to no environmental impact.
