Abstract
On January 27, 2017, former president Donald J. Trump signed Executive Order 13769 titled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States.†Despite its title, this executive order was not about protecting the nation. Inspired by anti-Muslim ideologies, Executive Order 13769 – nicknamed the Muslim-ban – was an order limiting immigration from Muslim majority countries with no true justification other than preventing Muslims from entering the United States. This research closely examines the Muslim-ban established by the Trump Administration using an ethical analysis method. How does the Muslim-ban uphold or oppose the values of freedom that the United States was founded on? This evaluation is based on the original executive order (13769) and the revisions of it later written by the administration in hope of passing it off as constitutional. Through the ethical analysis of these United States presidential executive orders, this study contributes to the greater understanding of discriminatory policies and executive orders in the United States and how anti-Muslim ideologies translate into government policies in a country that prides itself on its values of liberty.
