Abstract

When developing a potential Neutral Mass Spectrometer to study the lunar environment, the instrument should be sensitive enough to measure through the noise present in said environment. Proper procedures must be therefore implemented to appropriately pinpoint said noise which is synonymous with corrupted or disrupted data must. In turn, through careful statistical analysis of the neutral mass spectrometer present in the Rosetta Stone mission, relative abundances and composition of the present particles were quantified. The data from the Rosetta Mission provides great insight into the Moon’s similar setting as both environments completely lack an atmosphere. Using various non-linear regression models which heavily utilized the use of statically weighted (1/y) Gaussian curves, the relative abundance of the different particles was measured. As a result, such abundances can be taken into account as noise and help calibrate future instruments, and ensure said instruments can measure potential abundances that fall within smaller thresholds than the regression models provided.
