Abstract

Frequent climate changes affect intensity of extreme precipitation and heat events, and increase concentrations of certain pollutants like SO2, NO2, Ozone and particulate matter. With elevated levels of pollutants like ozone, portion of mortality also increases. To examine how temperature change and precipitation lead to changes in temporal patterns of specific air pollutants, we include EPA data for pollutants, including monitor sites and daily concentration, at several Michigan sites from 2005 to 2021. We use PRISM weather data to analyze extreme or temporal weather changes. Concentrations and climate change data were mapped using geolocated addresses. We find out that temporal patterns of precipitation and heat would lead to temporal patterns of specific air pollutants concentration, and there exists lagged correlation between climate variables and pollutants. However, no significant difference of air pollutants patterns is found between low income areas and high income areas of Michigan. In this case, in-depth study of pollutant concentration patterns would allow researchers to better predict pollutant concentration based on weather forecast or weather data, thus better calculating the potential risks to human health during various weather conditions.
