Abstract
Patients with high grade bladder cancer often opt to undergo a radical cystectomy in order to completely remove their bladder. Over the recent years, radical cystectomies have been scrutinized due to their high rate of postoperative complications and 90-day readmissions at 64% and 24%. In order to promote a healthy recovery, urologists recommend early ambulation and rest, however, studies have not yet been proved to quantitatively gather this information. According to past oncologist studies, relying on self-report questionnaires often skew data with an increase in movement and decrease in sedentary time. Furthermore, data collection on sleep is absent from research. The purpose of this study is to fill these unknowns. In order to better understand the recovery habits of patients post radical cystectomy, a trial was conducted in which every patient wore a physical activity monitor before and after surgery in order to better understand changes in activity and sleep. The impacts on sleep and physical activity aim to help doctors establish a baseline for the trends in patients. This would support a universal understanding of what should be recommended and implemented to patients post radical cystectomy.
