Abstract

Under Dr. Cheng at the Henry Ford Sleep Research Center, we are researching and modifying current technology to track sleep and circadian rhythms through the usage of everyday Apple Watches and its efficacy compared to industry-grade Philips Actiwatches. The watches we are using is a more applicable way to track sleep-wake cycles and light exposure for insomniac patients that would otherwise be very difficult to obtain. By working with patients one-on-one conducting research, and collecting personalized sleep journal data, we hope to test the efficacy of Apple Watches to mimic data produced by Philips Actiwatches, and add more knowledge to promote more widespread ways to track various sleep related data. This project, in particular, seeks to improve on the available methods to track sleep related data, and how we can make these methods more widely available for the general public. This research project seeks to improve our understanding on future implementations of more widespread technology for anyone. By working closely with our participants, the research team has been able to carefully track the data from our Philips Actiwatch as well as our Apple watch. The participants were also required to fill out daily sleep diary entries so we can measure their sleep qualities while they had the watches on to better understand the experiences they undergo. We hope we can generate more data that promote the implementation of more widespread ways to track sleep-related data. By better understanding the technologies that allow us to track sleep related data, we can promote more efficient and widespread tracking for insomniac patients.
