Abstract

In the 2022-23 academic year, the University of Michigan Solar Car team made the change from Marand branded motors to a more optimal and efficient Mitsuba branded motor. However, the Mitsuba motor doesn’t have a way to connect to a switch on the dashboard of the car to the motor which allows a change in gears while going at high speeds safely; there needs to be a delay of communication of 50 milliseconds to enable to coils of the motor to properly adjust. If the sent pulse doesn’t take account of this delay, then the motor will malfunction and cause the car to crash and injure the driver. This project pursues the development of a printed circuit board (PCB) to time a delay of 50 milliseconds in communication between the switch and the motor, so the driver can change gears while going at high speeds.
