Abstract
The Detroit Muslim Storytelling project was launched by the neighborhood revitalization association Dream of Detroit in 2020. The project provides educational material through oral history, documentary film, a website, and various publications to recognize the African-American Muslim community leaders in westside Detroit. The project is grounded in leadership and community-building historically and today, recognizing legacies of past and current social justice issues for a diverse community to create solutions and educational material, too. Prior to the Detroit Muslim Storytelling Project, Dream of Detroit was established in 2013 as a neighborhood revitalization organization that serves a target neighborhood of over 90% African Americans, where a majority of the residents are of low income status. The project focuses on producing and disseminating knowledge about the history and exploration of African-American Muslim community leadership in westside Detroit.
