Abstract

As bicyclists use the road with other motor vehicles, they become one of the most vulnerable groups on the road. In 2020, there were 938 traffic fatalities involving pedal cyclists, and 38,886 bicyclists were injured in traffic crashes in the United States (NHTSA, 2022). In recent years, the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has become common; however, the research on road users’ perception of automated overtaking tasks is insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to examine an automated overtaking scenario via the perception assessment of drivers and bicyclists. To do this, we plan on showing different overtaking scenarios to subjects using projectors to simulate the perspectives of both the driver and the bicyclist. These scenarios will differ in road scenarios and overtaking styles, with changes in parameters such as the longitudinal and lateral distances the car is to the bike when the overtaking begins and ends, the speed of the car, the angle that it overtakes at, and other environmental parameters. After they watch each simulation, we will give them a questionnaire asking about their perceived safety. We will combine this feedback with scores on risk assessments and a post-test questionnaire that indicates to us which parameters they believed contributed the greatest to their perceived level of safety, and with this data will modify our preliminary overtaking model. We are currently still collecting data, but we expect to find the safest possible overtaking parameters with these completed models, which will be considered in the automation of this feature.
