Abstract
Background and Objective: People with diabetes are known to face increased psychosocial distress. Factors like depression, stigma, and financial strain can have a profoundly detrimental effect on the mental health of people with diabetes and can impede their ability to effectively self-manage. The aim of this study is to analyze the psychological and social requirements of individuals with diabetes seen at Michigan Medicine and to recognize any potential gaps in the healthcare system that need to be modified in order to properly address these needs. Methods: This planned study which is expected to launch in March 2023 employs an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Part 1 of this study will be a quantitative online survey administered through Qualtrics to 2500 people with diabetes who are being treated at Michigan Medicine. In this sample, an estimated 33% of individuals have Type 1 diabetes, an estimated 66% have Type 2 diabetes, and about 100 people have gestational diabetes. Based on their responses in part 1, participants will be chosen for part 2 of our study which will be qualitative interviews. The transcripts of these interviews will be coded and thematically analyzed. Results and Future Directions: We will analyze the results using SAS software. We hypothesize that we will find actionable gaps that Michigan Medicine can improve upon, such as significant delays between initial referrals and receiving care. We also hypothesize that we will observe varying diabetes-related outcomes given factors such as mental health, social determinants of health, stigma/discrimination and access to healthcare/technology.
