Abstract

Background: The Interrupting Prolonged sitting with ACTivity (InPACT) at Home program provides children with access to virtual, instructor-led exercise videos to promote physical activity in the home. While this program has had statewide reach, there is a need to understand the effectiveness of the exercise videos to induce positive metabolic outcomes in youth. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the energy expenditure and zones of regulation by video type of the children ages 7-12 performing InPACT at Home exercise videos. Methods: Fifty-four participants ages 7-12 years will be recruited to participate in this study. Participants will complete 5×8-minute InPACT at Home exercise videos (cardio, strength, and mindfulness) and 1×8-minute sedentary control video. Energy expenditure will be measured with the COSMED. Results: Data collection has been collected since the Summer of 2022. The average calories burned for cardio was 24.79 ± 1.57. The average calories burned for strength training was 20.5 ± 2.40. The average number of calories burned for sports skills was 20.44 ± 1.92. The average number of calories burned for mindfulness was 19.57 ± 1.96. Conclusion: We concluded that cardio-based video types led to higher levels of energy expenditure. This is likely due to the dynamic nature of cardio based movement included in the videos such as jumping jacks, burpees, and high knees. Applications of these findings include tailored exercise videos as a feasible way for children to engage in health-enhancing intermittent activities. Future research should investigate how these videos can be integrated into the daily physical activity acquirement.
