Abstract

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE, lupus) an chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that results in an immune system attack on an individual’s own tissues and organs. Physical activity and exercise are modifiable lifestyle behaviors that may be used to manage symptoms of lupus, yet, many individuals with lupus do not engage in sufficient levels of exercise and physical activity. A qualitative study is being done to document the perspectives and viewpoints of physical activity and exercise among adults diagnosed with SLE through semi-structured interviews. Our research question is as stated: How do the manifestations of lupus impact physical activity and exercise engagement? Participants of this study will complete a battery of questionnaires on their symptoms and physical activity behavior and participate in a one-hour semi-structured interview via Zoom. The interviews will concern the participants’ knowledge of physical activity and exercise, lupus symptoms, and barriers to physical activity/exercise as a result of their lupus symptoms. These interviews will be transcribed verbatim and de-identified. The research team will conduct a thematic qualitative analysis. The results from this study will provide information to inform the design of physical activity and exercise interventions to manage the manifestations of SLE.
