Abstract
Despite the critical importance of emergency response systems (ERS) in providing life-saving pre-hospital care, existing research is lacking regarding the efficiency of the numerous different ERS systems in countries throughout the world. ERS systems can vary in a number of ways: required minimum response times, certification requirements for care providers, public versus private ownership, interconnected versus independent county systems, and much more. This combination of variables contribute to the success—which can be judged on a lot of factors—of the numerous systems around the world. My research was conducted through a thorough literature review of the existing research and government reports. My goal was to compile this data into a concise guide showing potential associations between the different variables in ERS systems and how they affect patient health outcomes. Associations can be seen between an increase in government intervention and an increase in the survival rate of certain medical conditions like cardiac arrest. Regardless of where you are on the scale of government intervention in the pre-hospital system, an increase in that involvement associates to an increase of varying degrees in the successes of patient health outcomes. This information adds nuance to how a country might look at reimagining its level of intervention in its own ERS to provide health services to its citizens.
