Abstract
Technological advancements in the past decade have transformed the management of valvular heart disease (VHD). Today, many varieties of valvular replacements are prevalent, such as mechanical and prosthetic valves. Though these have made a significant impact on treatment of valvular disease, there are many risks associated with age and individual health, as well as variations and limitations in longevity and effectiveness. Auscultation could help to detect degeneration of replacement valves early, as current studies suggest differences in heart sound detection and frequency for aortic and mitral valve replacements. However, there is a gap in literature regarding the impact of different valvular replacements on auscultation. This study analyzed the impact of valve composition – mechanical vs prosthetic – on the ability to detect normal and pathologic heart sounds. Aortic and mitral heart sounds were collected via electronic stethoscope from patients with valvular replacements at Michigan Medicine. Preliminary results will reveal whether composition of valvular replacements have a significant effect on heart sound detectability. This study is part of growing research on the impact of valvular replacement on auscultation, sound quality, and detectability of heart sounds.
