Abstract

Across U.S. higher education institutions, metrics for assessing workforce data are not direct and transparent, and some even require restricted access to uncover key metrics. This research project seeks to collect information on workforce growth across leading institutions, and investigate key differences in employee headcount as well as potential drivers such as student enrollment, research output/enterprises, and health system activity. National databases and institutional websites were used to collect historical workforce data. Metrics such as employee headcount, student enrollment, research expenditures, and student-faculty ratios varied across the limited set of research institutions investigated. Therefore, such findings reflect critical issues that can help make HR researchers and administrators more informed regarding institutional and definitional differences and drivers and how they impact workforce planning efforts.
