Abstract
High-precision chemical analysis of archeological samples requires preparation in ultra-clean laboratory environments. The undesired introduction of impurities (chemical or physical contamination) could detrimentally alter the data, compromising interpretation. In addition, sample preparation protocols often call for use of chemical reagents that are best employed in a safe, highly controlled laboratory environment. Samples from our study include animal teeth (domesticated and feral) and soil cores from a Bronze Age site in Serbia that exhibits early evidence for metallurgical working. Preliminary analysis of samples by ICP-MS (ICAP and laser ablation ICP) has reinforced the need for pre-preparation in an ultra-clean, contamination-free laboratory space prior to chemical analysis. To that end, we have restored a former clean lab space on campus that provides the necessary specification for ultra-clean (HEPA-filtered) air, H2O, chemical reagents and fume hoods for this work to be carried out. Through a collective effort geared towards lab re-organization, re-inventory of supplies, and repairs to the lab and air balancing systems, we have achieved a successful outcome for this step of the study. This presentation will highlight some of the steps involved in restoring a Class-10,000 clean lab to its former specifications, and a view of the work commencing in this unique space.
